Depression and Panic Attacks

Over time, anxiety panic episodes have been regarded as being caused by anxiety by medical professionals and psychologists. The use of medication and other ways of reducing the anxiety that comes with having a panic attack were once thought to be sufficient to address the symptoms, because the panic attacks were considered to be an expression of a person's fear of what is going on in the environment.

The psychological and medical professions have recently began to recognize a strong interconnection between depression and panic attacks. Although depression is not necessarily included in the symptoms suffered by the person who has heavy anxiety, the relationship between the two has shown itself strongly enough to have researchers begin looking for treatments that address both conditions.

Is it so that depression triggers panic attacks, or do panic attacks cause depression? A number of researchers have the point of view that each one effects the other. One will often experience anxiety when they have to perform in a social situation if they feel depressed. And the manner in which feelings of panic and anxiety impede daily life will have a lot to do with the person's feelings of depression.

Whether depression triggers panic attacks, or panic attacks are the cause of depression, you can be helped to cope with these conditions by a variety of treatments that can be found. You may have to work with several different strategies to get the relief you are seeking, since no one treatment can achieve the same results for every person. A comprehensive approach is what doctors often prescribe - more than one strategy implemented in concert with one another can provide maximum results.

There are numerous self help methods and they are among the first solutions tried by most who suffer from panic and anxiety. Educating yourself about the causes and symptoms of panic attacks is of great importance. To understand depression and panic attacks, you need to fully research the subject. You need to be aware of how panic attacks can be treated, and how those who are suffering from them cope with the daily struggle of managing their lives with these conditions.

Two powerful methods for self help are meditation and exercise. Through the practice of meditation, you will be helped to adopt a calmer frame of mind, and develop a greater feeling of serenity in your everyday life. In order to get rid of sadness and worry, exercise has the power to release chemicals in the body that will overcome such feelings. You will feel better mentally and physically because the physical tension you are experiencing is reduced. You will begin to handle routine, everyday tasks with greater ease because your energy level will be enhanced.

Being depressed and having and panic attacks can be greatly helped by a good counselor. In counseling you will begin to see that you are able to manage
with your symptoms, and that they can be treated as well. The primary causes of your condition will oftentimes be discovered with the help of counseling, along with the situations in your life that can set off periods of sadness and anxiety. The effects of depression and panic attacks can be dealt with successfully over time through counseling sessions.

In addition to self help methods and counseling it may be expedient to take medication if needs be. In order to speed up your recovery time, your doctor may conclude it is necessary to prescribe antidepressants and medications for anxiety. Tofranil, Norpramin, and Aventyl are some popular tricyclic drugs that are used to help your recovery. If you achieve relief from just one of these medications, then multiple medications along with possible adverse effects will not be needed. As with most medications, there can be side effects associated with taking tricyclic antidepressants. These can include weight gain, irritability, and sexual dysfunction. Always be sure to contact your doctor if any of these side effects may occur.

I'm making this page about panic attacks because I had them, and they suck! When I first had one, I didn't even know what it was. I just kind of flipped into a state of fear. I happened to be at work, so I went downstairs and walked around the block. When I returned I said I was sick and took the rest of the day off. This was actually the start of a series of scary attacks. (That's not me in the picture...I'm a guy!) - 2 years ago
